LIST PICK
LA PRIEST BEGINNING
Today, we’re doing a spot of time travelling with LA Priest, aka Sam Eastgate. We’re quite shocked to find that we haven’t covered before here at TMR, and that’s simply because he’s brilliant. New track ‘Beginning’ is transportative psychedelia at its finest. The floating, mesmeric vocals layered on top of one another create an out-of-body listening experience, supported by those retro guitar inflections. The icing on top of this shroom cake is the video in which the rambling LA Priest relentlessly plays his guitar with solemn expression, all the while dressed like he’s an especially eccentric member of the Brazilian religion Vale do Amanhecer. The meaning of all of this is entirely up to interpretation, although we’ve picked up on the lyric, “if you fall in love before listening to the chorus, you’re a forty-five, four star high”; connecting the title ‘Beginning’ to that special moment of falling in love before you’ve even hit the chorus, whether that be in the literal musical sense or a metaphorical application to life and love. With just one month out of LA Priest’s second album release, ‘Beginning’ certainly is a tantalizing introduction. GENE LP is out on June 5th via Domino Records. - Hannah Thacker [Photo credit: Isaac Eastgate]
